More disasters since we began a decade ago. What to do now, and how?

Lisa Baumgarten proposes critical design pedagogies, Bianca Elzenbaumer (Brave New Alps, La Foresta) provides outlooks on transformative design practices in troubled times with a historical take, Manuel Grebenjak (radius) offers capacity building and strategies for social movement actors (📖 Tipping Points – Strategies Within the Climate Movement Ecosystem), Miriam Lang (Universidad Andina Simón Bolivar) lays out systemic emancipatory transformations beyond the development paradigm with a trans-local perspective from Latin America (Pacto Ecosocial Del Sur), while Teacher-researchers, students and alumni of the Master in Eco-Social Design take a critical look at the development, achievements and shortcomings of eco-social design and discuss future trajectories in a world that appears drastically different than it did 10 years ago. Ivan Txaparro (resonar lab) will move us with radical storytelling and live music into resonant futures together with Vera Nois from Argentina… and many more.

Register until 30 April for early-bird benefits and join the solidarity-ticketing. We provide free indoor camping for the first 100 registrants.

conference + festival + camp

Since the beginning in 2013, the annual By Design and by Disaster Conference has been focusing on social-ecological transformations, and what design and art can contribute along with partners and allies. It’s a gathering of eco/social/political designers and artists, activists, critical scientists, courageous farmers, unconventional social workers and entrepreneurs, commoners and other transformation-engaged species. The event series co-develops with the Master in Eco-Social Design at the Faculty of Design and Art at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Starting in 2015/16, ‘DDcon’ offers a mix of inspiring talks, hands-on workshops, paper presentations, performances, walks, talks and more in a convivial atmosphere with tasty food, concerts, DJs, dancing, bonfire, sun, mountains… and whatever we make out of it together. To give more space to emerging debates and spontaneous activities this year, we will have an afternoon open space without a parallel programme. In 2026 By Design and by Disaster is taking place again at the social activation hubBASIS Vinschgau Venosta, an omnipotent re-use project of the former Drusus barracks in Schlanders-Silandro.

»Preguntando caminamos«

A Principle of the Zapatista movement

It is time to ask pressing questions and to collaborate on the answers: How to respond to the rising far-right and other authoritarian tendencies? What to do in the light of probable collapse scenarios and ongoing conflicts, crises and catastrophes? What counters the disempowering feelings of delusion and political depression? How to co-create collective empowerment, mutual care and nourishing movements? How to prepare (for) social tipping points and be prepared (for) opening windows of opportunities? How to create trans-local and global solidarity in movements and joint struggles, and how to re/produce them (along supply chains)? Who are our partners and allies? How can we build upon and interconnect what and who is already there to gain overarching traction? Why has our practice been defined the way it was, and how must we change it? What is our history, and what future should we strive fore? What have we relied on that we no longer can?

Based on these and other traversal questions, we established three main tracks, as well as one more for open space and free time: What can and needs to be done now? In Learning & Teaching (Track 1), Practices & Projects (Track 2) and Strategies & Structures (Track 3).

→ Read more about the tracks in the call for papers and visual essays.

Solidarity–Ticketing

The conference offers a structured registration fee schedule designed to accommodate a diverse range of participants. We acknowledge the varying circumstances of our attendees and have thus established a tiered pricing system to ensure accessibility. If you are unable to pay for any reason, please send us an email!

Additionally to the 3-day programme, all tickets include lunches, coffee breaks and snacks, a concert and a party. Registration is required and binding because we need to plan based on the number of visitors to prevent scarcity and waste (drinks and additional food options cost extra).

Early Bird Registration → until 30th of April

This tier is offered for people with limited financial means (excluding presenters of the academic track). Take off and stay grounded!

We don’t fly in speakers, workshoppers and other contributors to avoid reproducing the Imperial Mode of Living as much as we can. In case you need to take a plane to come to our conference, rethink! It’s a pity no to have you with us here, but instead you might find another relevant event in a nearby region or join forces with others to organise a sibling of By Design and by Disaster. We will support you!
Recommendation: read Aviation: A Matter of Climate Justice (PDF) by Stay Grounded and support them.

About the conference

By Design and by Disaster Conference 2026 is taking place from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 23rd of May.

The conference is intended for anyone passionate about strong sustainability, just transition, climate justice, the commons, care and other topics of social-ecological transformation: Transformation-engaged designers and artists, activists, critical scientists, courageous farmers, unconventional social workers and entrepreneurs, commoners and anyone with an interest in discovering new points of view, dialogue and discussion on contemporary issues, eager to challenge and change the status quo.

No, it is not possible to participate online because the conference is not optimised for hybrid participation and we want to favour a hands-on experience. If interested, you can find out more about the programme contents in the conference proceedings.

The conference will be held entirely in English to give as many people as possible the opportunity to participate and interact during the activities. As the region in which the event is held is bilingual (mainly German and Italian), the conference aims to foster multicultural cohesion, making it accessible to all, including people from different backgrounds.

Don’t worry, if you think your English is not good enough. Most participants are not native speakers, and we can help each other with whispering translation and body language. Never hesitate to ask for help or to ask questions in your preferred language.

We are excited that our conference will again be situated at BASIS vinschgau-venosta. BASIS is an excellent collaborating partner; it describes itself as re-use project and social activation hub. For the social development in the areas of economy, culture, education and social affairs, it activates and re-uses the former military base that is its home.
