In the project Transforming the City by Care, 9 teams of students of the Master in Eco-Social Design are working together with the social cooperative OfficineVispa in Bolzano Don Bosco for a neighbourhood development towards a more solidary and sustainable future. Particular attention is given to the diverse social practices of care, and to social infrastructures, which are enabling dwellers and stakeholders to care for each other, for the built environment and nature. The project is supported by the Office for Family, Women, Youth and Social Promotion of the Municipality of Bolzano.
It builds upon past projects to facilitate desirable long-term developments. It connects with many diverse actors such as associations, institutions, small businesses, persons from public administration, local politics, and dwellers of Don Bosco. After a phase of initial research and explorations, we kick-started the process with the participatory event Salotto Don Bosco – Qui, i discorsi si accendono. Part of it have been an exhibition of past projects and 4 topic tables, each focussing the discussion on one important issue for Don Bosco. You can find a summery of the outcomes from each “Tovolo tematico” here.

Nonwithstanding the pandemic conditions, students managed to reach out and develop prototypes together with a wide variety of partner. Below you find a sneak preview of ech project. We will publish a complete documentation soon, and in spring we will present and discuss the projects publically in Don Bosco, to find out what and how to continue. Transformation as a never ending dance in cricles :)
COMPANE
creating a culture of sharing and togetherness
A stone oven in the community garden behind the historically valuable “Casa Semirurale” in don Bosco is the basis of our project. With the help of organisations and the neighbourhood of don Bosco, we create monthly bread baking meetings that provide space for community, intercultural exchange and a culture of sharing and togetherness.
Un forno di pietra nel giardino comunitario dietro la storica “Casa Semirurale” di don Bosco è il fulcro del nostro progetto. Con l’aiuto di alcune organizzazioni e degli abitanti del quartiere di don Bosco, abbiamo la volontà di organizzare incontri mensili nei quali insegnare il processo di panificazione. Il nostro obbiettivo è quello di incentivare l’aggregazione della comunità, lo scambio interculturale e la condivisione tra i residenti.

MEZO
A recipe for the future • Una ricetta per il futuro
When thinking about the future many things will come to mind. Soap might not have been one of them. It is a basic commodity, mostly made of fat and lye, not futurity. So we changed the recipe. Instead of specially produced fats, used oil is repurposed. An approach to reduce waste of resources and oil contamination. Ingredients do not get imported from far away but are picked up right from the local fast food shop. After frying fries, the same oil can also clean hands. Fast food shops are also places where all kinds of people meet. Therefore the soap should not only contain ingredients from the kitchen but also ideas and character from the people. Oil, a waste material, considered dirty and disgusting transforms into clean and precious. Soap, an object of commodity transformed into a medium. Mezo.
Quando si pensa al futuro vengono in mente molte cose. Il sapone sicuramente non è una di queste. È un prodotto di uso quotidiano, per lo più fatto di grasso e soda caustica, non contiene niente di futuristico. Quindi abbiamo cambiato la ricetta. Invece di grassi prodotti appositamente, riutilizziamo l‘olio di scarto della frittura. Un approccio per ridurre lo spreco di risorse e la dispersione dell‘olio nell‘ambiente. Gli ingredienti non vengono importati da lontano, ma vengono direttamente dal fast food locale. Dopo aver fritto le patatine, lo stesso olio può anche pulire le mani. I fast food sono luoghi d’incontro di persone di tutti i tipi. Pertanto il sapone non deve contenere solo ingredienti della cucina, ma anche le idee e i sentimenti delle persone. L‘olio usato, un materiale di scarto, considerato sporco e disgustoso si trasforma in un prezioso alleato per la nostra pulizia. Il sapone, un prodotto di uso comune trasformato in medium. mezo.

Turns on the spotlight towards accessible housing for all • verso un abitare universalmente accessibile
Everybody has the right to live in dignity and to have a secure, adequate and affordable place to live. For many people in Bolzano, this right is not being met. The provincial government has made commitments to tackle this pressing issue, bringing in new strategies and law changes. We fear this is not enough and through a campaign we wanted to draw attention to the barriers that people are facing, spark public conversation and put pressure on decision makers to act. A blog on salto.bz was used to go in-depth and distribute articles and reports. This was accompanied by public projections of statistics, personal statements and demands, bringing the conversation to the residential buildings of Bolzano.
Abbiamo tutti il diritto a un posto sicuro, adeguato e accessibile dove vivere dignitosamente. Per molte persone a Bolzano, questo diritto non viene rispettato. Il governo provinciale si è impegnato nella promessa di affrontare questa situazione urgente, proponendo nuove strategie e leggi. Temiamo però che ciò non sia abbastanza e attraverso una campagna visiva vogliamo attirare l’attenzione sugli ostacoli vissuti dalle persone, accendendo così un dibattito pubblico e mettere sotto pressione l’amministrazione affinché agisca. Attraverso il blog su salto.bz abbiamo approfondito l’argomento e diffuso articoli e rapporti. Questa attività è stata accompagnata da proiezioni pubbliche di statistiche, dichiarazioni di individui e richieste, portando così la conversazione sugli edifici residenziali di Bolzano.

Sewing new life into clothes destined for landfill • Cucire una nuova vita per i vestiti destinati alla discarica
At Riscrivere il Finale we give Don Bosco’s unwanted clothes a new lease of life. By working in partnership with Don Bosco Social, we repair clothes destined for landfill and create an alternative ending to the story. After seeing the alarming amount of clothes that were being put in the clothing bins in and around Don Bosco, we knew we had to do something. Through ‘visible mending’ and reselling, we are not only fabricating expressive, one-of-a-kind pieces: but are also generating a value and a new network for clothes that were once viewed as worthless.
A Riscrivere il Finale diamo una nuova vita agli abiti indesiderati di Don Bosco. Lavorando in collaborazione con Don Bosco Social, ripariamo gli abiti destinati alla discarica e creiamo un finale alternativo alla loro storia. Dopo aver visto la quantità allarmante di vestiti che venivano messi nei bidoni degli indumenti usati a Don Bosco, abbiamo capito che dovevamo fare qualcosa. Attraverso la tecnica di riparazione della “toppa applicata dall’interno” e la vendita, non fabbrichiamo solo pezzi espressivi e unici: ma generiamo anche un valore e una nuova rete per abiti che un tempo erano considerati inutili.

FARSI LUOGO
Il futuro di piazza Don Bosco
Farsi Luogo is a poetic expression to describe the goal of our project. It means to become, to create, to be part of one’s place. Farsi Luogo refers to Piazza Don Bosco, the heart of the Italian neighborhood in Bolzano. Starting from last year’s results through the Piazzati project, we wanted to deepen the needs and desires of the community. Based on this, we created 5 photomontages to propose concrete visions to the residents on which they could express their opinion. After a two-day feedback session, we evaluated the neighborhood’s preferences and mapped them by age group. These results were presented graphically and will then be handed over to the responsible parties, as well as the commissioned architect, who will begin a project to redesign Piazza Don Bosco in the summer of 2022.
Farsi Luogo è un’espressione poetica per descrivere l’obbiettivo del nostro progetto.
Questo termine significa diventare, creare, essere parte del proprio luogo. Farsi luogo è un progetto riferito a Piazza Don Bosco, il cuore del quartiere italiano a Bolzano. Partendo dai risultati ottenuti nel progetto Piazzati, svoltosi lo scorso anno, abbiamo voluto approfondire I bisogni e I desideri della comunità. Basandoci su di esso abbiamo creato 5 fotomontaggi per proporre ipotetici scenari della Piazza ai residenti, sui quali potessero esprimere le loro opinioni. Sucessivamente a due giorni di sondaggi, abbiamo analizzato e mappato le preferenze della comunità dividendole per fasce d’età.
Questi risultati sono stati poi tradotti graficamente e verranno consegnati al Comune.
Spetterà poi all’architetto selezionato per il progetto di riqualificazione della Piazza decidere se utilizzarli o meno.

KIN
Growing Together • Crescere Insieme
KIN builds community resilience and reciprocity by bringing people together to co-create circular mushroom community-owned farms. We aim to reconnect urban dwellers with a sense of deep interdependence with the living world while providing new pathways towards food sovereignty.
KIN is a program for starting small community-owned and operated mushroom farms in urban spaces that brings people closer to nature and to each other. Our program is meant to be a catalyst for alternative economies by empowering communities to grow their own food. Our vision is to see small mushroom farms fill apartment buildings and abandoned spaces throughout Don Bosco where each one is a source of food, pleasure, and conviviality for the neighborhood.
Participants come together to grow, harvest, and share the fruits of their efforts together over a single mushroom lifecycle while engaging in educational workshops on fungi as one of nature’s great models of cooperation and reflecting on what we might learn for our own relationships to our human and more-than-human neighbors.
KIN è un programma per avviare piccole coltivazioni di funghi gestite dalla comunità in spazi domestici, per incoraggiare le persone ad avvicinarsi alla natura e alle persone. Il progetto ha lo scopo di essere un catalizzatore di economie alternative, dando alla comunità la possibilità di coltivare il proprio cibo.
La nostra visione futura è di vedere Don Bosco pieno di piccole fattorie di funghi in ogni condominio, e che ognuna sia una fonte di cibo, piacere e convivialità per tutto il quartiere.
I partecipanti si riuniscono per coltivare, raccogliere e condividere insieme i frutti dei loro sforzi durante il ciclo di vita di un singolo fungo. Essi si impegnano in laboratori educativi sui funghi come uno dei grandi modelli di cooperazione della natura e riflettono su ciò che potrebbero imparare per le relazioni con i nostri vicini umani e non solo umani.

“Let them hear us” was born from the need to revaluate the manual skills of artisanship. Recognising the importance of establishing a connection between young people and the local territory, we promote the “Learning by doing” approach as a medium to stimulate youngsters’ will to rediscover the value of these abilities embedded in the regional heritage.
This knowledge fosters a critical view towards the objects that surround us and contributes to a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of products, production processes, and sustainable consumption.
In collaboration with OfficineVispa and students of G. Pascoli High School, our team organised a series of workshops that focus on the perception we have of everyday objects, their value and quality. Together we explored the art of repair as a potential strength of the new artisanship, which helped lay the groundwork for a new way of thinking that overcomes the built-in obsolescence and consumerism.
“Facciamoci sentire” nasce dall’esigenza di rivalutare le competenze manuali del mestiere artigianale. Riscontrando la necessità di ricreare una connessione tra i giovani e il territorio locale, promuoviamo l’approccio “Learning by doing” come strumento per incentivare i giovani a riscoprire l’importanza di queste abilità, radicate nella storia di un territorio.
Queste conoscenze oltre a stimolare uno sguardo critico verso gli oggetti che ci circondano, aiutano a comprendere maggiormente l’impatto ambientale dei prodotti, i processi produttivi e il consumo sostenibile. Focalizzandoci sulla percezione che abbiamo del valore e della qualità degli oggetti, abbiamo realizzato, in collaborazione con le Officine Vispa e insieme agli studenti del Liceo Pascoli, una serie di workshop che mostrano come esplorare l’arte della riparazione significhi porre le basi per un nuovo modo di pensare che contrasti l’obsolescenza programmata e il consumismo della società attuale.

Pop up for equality
The strength of the community
Through events that are creative, educative and most of all fun, we want to create a community and build up a network of likeminded young women. A space, where we can lift each other up and collaborate together. The first event will be a guided creative workshop in a bar based in Bolzano‘s Don Bosco, where participants can create their own linocut designs, print and take them home with them.

CREIAMO
Sentirsi liberi di imparare
Creiamo is a project that aims to help people conquer the fear of trying new things through creating together. We want to form an experience where people try something new for themselves and don’t feel pressured to be succeeding right away, a space where they feel not judged and failure is welcomed. We believe that enjoyment and interest should be the reasons of practicing skills, not the idea of failure or success.
Creiamo acknowledges the learning anxiety, being intimidated by learning new skills. With two sessions of an event, we aim to change the stigma that something is only worth doing if you are perfect at it. We embrace the learning process with its failures as having a healthy relationship with failing is essential to progress in learning.
Creiamo è un progetto che mira ad aiutare le persone a superare la paura di provare cose nuove, creando insieme. Vorremo proporre un’esperienza dove le persone possono sperimentare qualcosa di nuovo per loro non sentendo la pressione di dover essere perfetti fin dall’inizio, ma anche un luogo dove non sentirsi giudicati e dove il fallimento è accettato. Crediamo che il divertimento e l’interesse debbano essere le motivazioni che portano a praticare nuove competenze, non l’idea di fallimento o successo.
Creiamo è consapevole dello stress legato all’imparare competenze nuove. L’evento, che sarà composto da due sessioni, ha come obiettivo quello di cambiare lo stigma che ci fa credere che valga la pena provare qualcosa solo se siamo bravi a farla. Affronteremo il processo di apprendimento imparando a gestire il fallimento come parte essenziale del processo di apprendimento.
