Open Talk by Friederike Habermann

Master in Eco-Social Design, Free University of Bozen–Bolzano, room F6
Apocalypse has been imagined many times in history, but for the first time it can be scientifically substantiated – and the world is doing business as usual. What are the reasons? It’s the economy, stupid: Growth compulsion. And: It’s the culture, stupid! It’s the common sense that decides what we take for granted, and what we consider changeable. Our commons sense, in turn, has hugely to do with a third aspect: power relations.
Changes must therefore be structural in order to eliminate the growth imperative. In order to do this, however, they must be cultural. Fortunately, there is a logic beyond power and the market, as old as humanity and with the promise of a possible good life for all: commons.
Friederike Habermann is an economist and historian with a PhD in political science, active in social movements since 1980, independent researcher and author of eight monographs, of which the most recent is the first in English: Overcoming Exploitation and Externalisation. An Intersectional Theory of Hegemony and Transformation (Routledge 2024).
