From January 28th to February 7th, the public library in Salurn will host an exhibition on peat extraction in South Tyrol. After some parts of this exhibition were previously shown in Bolzano, it now invites visitors to add their perspectives!
As part of the Eco-Social Design master thesis by Laisa Cordes, the exhibition offers insight into the unique peat soil of the Adige Valley, the history of peat extraction, and its current challenges. For many years, peat extraction has created a tense conflict between economic interests and environmental protection. With the ongoing climate crisis, peat extraction in South Tyrol is expected to be banned as the old extraction licenses near expiration. But once this happens, what should become of these areas, some of which still contain peat soil?
To explore this question, the exhibition in Salurn provides an interactive space where diverse opinions and arguments can be shared. It presents possible future scenarios for peatlands and invites visitors to evaluate, discuss, and expand upon these ideas. Addressing a highly debated issue, the exhibition aims not only to raise awareness but also to create dialogue between different stakeholders.
If you are interested in the topic, would like to listen in, or share your own ideas and arguments, feel free to attend the project presentation and the dialogue on the future of peat areas!
