POC21: Building the tools we need for the world we want
The U.N. climate negotiations COP21 will take place in Paris this December. Most experts on the field consider COP21 to be the last chance for a groundbreaking agreement to limit climate change to levels that keep the planet inhabitable for humanity beyond our lifetime.
Against this dire background we think it´s high time to move from protest to prototype.
To kickstart this, in the uprun to the global mega event COP21 we´ll try something unprecedented: We call it POC21, a Proof Of Concept for open sourcing sustainability.
From 15.08. to 20.09.2015 the best open source projects, +100 makers, engineers, scientists, architects, inventors and designers will join forces at Chateau de Millemont near Paris to build the tools for a truly sustainable society. In a structured innovation process of 5 weeks of co-living and co-making they´ll collaboratively create and prototype tools to supply the basic human needs like food, housing, energy, communication and mobility.
The process is guided by the idea to rebalance social, environmental, and economical interests of today. The results will be showcased on site in a demo sustainability village, a mobile exhibition that will travel trough Europe, and in a blend of „Whole Earth and IKEA Catalogue”. A massive media outreach and professional documentary will push the core message into mainstream: Sustainability is feasible, looks and works awesome and can be the alternative we need for the world we want.
All results will be freely available and useable for everybody, ready for adoption and further development. A new breed of open products: need oriented, long lasting, reparable solutions with less consumption of raw materials through closed material flows (circular economy), enabled for local production. Facing the urgency of climate and resource crises, we believe that Open Source has the potential to help mainstream sustainable lifestyles.
