Rhythms of Resistance and Subversive Dance

Presented by
Ivan Txaparro

This workshop draws from Afro-Indigenous musical traditions across the Americas, historically rooted in resistance and activism. Through practices such as bullerengue, cumbia, drum circles, and sound systems, participants will explore how these forms foster resilience and collective strength.

Focusing on activists facing emotional and social pressures, the workshop introduces “subversive dance” as a practice to unlearn embodied power structures. Through group exercises on rhythm, body awareness, and groove, participants engage in collaborative performance experiments that cultivate creative resilience and collective empowerment.
